Butler Workers Honored with 2025 NASS Medallion Award

Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore has awarded Butler Hospital SEIU 1199NE members the 2025 NASS Medallion Award, recognizing their outstanding service, civic engagement, and historic dedication to patient care during the three-month strike — the longest hospital strike in Rhode Island history.

In his letter, Secretary Amore praised Butler caregivers for their solidarity, civic action, and the contract victory that raised wages, protected health and retirement benefits, and improved workplace safety. He called Butler workers an inspiration to Rhode Islanders across the labor movement and beyond.

Caregivers Begin Returning to Butler Hospital, Marking a Major Step Toward Restoring Vital Behavioral Health Services

On behalf of both Butler Hospital and the members of SEIU 1199NE, We are proud to announce that as of Sunday, members have begun returning to work, and the process is continuing each day as more caregivers come back to their patients. This is an important step toward the full restoration of all services that thousands of patients rely on at Butler Hospital each year. Butler Hospital is a beacon of hope for individuals and families who need behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment. We look forward to working together to strengthen our hospital’s ability to meet the needs of its patients, employees, and the entire community while advancing the vital mission of Butler Hospital.

Important Return-to-Work Information for Members

With the strike ending, employees have been sent important information by certified U.S. mail about the process of reporting back to work at the Hospital. Please check your mail and make sure you follow the instructions in that letter. These letters were sent on 8/19, and should arrive within the next few days. Even if you haven’t yet received your letter, you can call or text your manager directly, or you can send an email to BHHR@butler.org with information or questions about returning to work.

On behalf of both Butler Hospital and members of the SEIU 1199NE bargaining committee representing all job classifications of the hospital, we are pleased to share that a tentative agreement has been reached. More details will be forthcoming in the coming days.

Throughout our historic strike, Butler caregivers stepped up, logging over 1,600 volunteer hours across Rhode Island. We stocked food pantries, cleaned neighborhoods, backed community events, and stood with our neighbors. And we’re not stopping now.

Rhode Island Blood Center, which is facing a statewide blood emergency. With the blood supply dangerously low, especially for O-negative and        O-positive types, every donation counts. Butler caregivers have already stepped up to donate, and more are signing up each week.
